The Importance of Vitamin D + Giveaway

Vita Optimum Vitamin D3
As a registered dietitian, I have learned a lot about the importance of vitamin D levels. In the area that I live in (Michigan), it is common to have vitamin D levels due the cold weather that we have for at least 6 months of the year and lack of sunshine. Therefore, it is very important to get your vitamin D levels checked and take supplements as necessary.

When I first found out that I was pregnant, I got some bloodwork and had my vitamin D levels checked. Mine were fine but my doctor told me that almost all pregnant women have low vitamin D levels making supplementation necessary. Also, my mom has had issues with low vitamin D levels in the past and now takes supplements for it.

The importance of vitamin D is very important to me as well on a professional level because low vitamin D levels in the elderly population (which is whom I work with) can be detrimental to their health.

I completed my Master's thesis (a 29 page research paper that took lots of time and effort) on the effects of vitamin D deficiency in the elderly and found that low levels of vitamin D can lead to loss in bone, strength, function and can cause pain. Vitamin D deficiency is also a risk factor for cancer, falls, fractures, renal insufficiency, neurologic disorders and mortality. This shows how important having optimal levels of vitamin D is.

I recently had the opportunity to review vitamin D3 supplements from Vita Optimum which comes in a 5000 IU serving. These can be purchased on Amazon.com and shipped quickly. My prenatal has enough vitamin D for now but once the winter comes, I will probably start taking a higher dose of vitamin D just to make sure that I am getting enough.

It is made with organic extra virgin olive oil and has no fillers or preservatives. They offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee and a no questions asked return policy. All products are made in the US.

To get 25% off your Vita Optimum order on Amazon, use the code VITOFF25.

  1. Hey Amanda, I have a question! What is the purpose of getting a vitamin that has such high of IUs? The body can only absorb 500-600 IUs at once, so it seems like a waste to me.

    1. Hello, if you have a deficiency for example, you would be put on a prescription for 50,000 IU at a time (this is what many of my patients are on). Your body cannot absorb everything in a vitamin so you take a higher amount so that it can absorb a good amount of it. Good question!
