Tips to Boost Your Energy When You Haven't Slept
As a mom to a young child, I certainly understand sleep deprivation. In fact, last night, my daughter was up at 3 AM crying because she wanted to come into bed with us. Today at work, I find myself yawning. Thankfully, Adalyn being up in the night is a lot less common now than when she was a newborn but that does not mean that I am sleeping well.

I am a very type A person. I always have a million things on my mind. I have a to-do list always that is filled with all kinds of things that I-must-do-or-else! Often times, when it is time for bed, my brain does not want to shut off. Part of it is definitely my fault. I am terrible about going on my phone on different social media before bed.

When it is finally lights out, I have a hard time not thinking about things and having my mind run wild. It always takes me quite awhile to fall asleep, no matter how tired I am. The one thing that seems to work well for me is to go to bed early. No matter what time I go to bed, I am up at 5:30-6:20 AM, even on a day off. I hate this! Therefore, going to bed earlier is the only thing that will work for me.

There have been many nights when I have not gotten the sleep that I need and let me tell you, it is hard to go to work that next day. Especially during the mid-day slump, I am exhausted!

Here are some of my tips for boosting your energy when you have not gotten enough sleep:

1. Exercise first thing in the morning

I know, I know! I sound like a broken record but exercising first thing in the morning is what helps me to feel my best in so many ways. Exercise gives me a boost of energy, even when I don't have any. My exercise of choice is usually walking. Although it may seem like exercising may make you more tired, this is  usually not the case.

2. Eat nutrient rich foods

Although your body may be craving junk food when you are sleep deprived, it is not what it actually wants. Instead, have whole grains which gives you a steady supply of energy instead of spiking your blood sugar quickly and then crashing like sugar or refined grains will do. I love oatmeal in the morning or a whole-grain bar for a snack.

3. Don't overdo the caffeine

Although when you are tired, you may feel like having a  bunch of coffee or other caffeinated beverages, do not overdo it because it may make you feel worse. If you are truly tired, the caffeine will not really help and may make you crash worse once the effects of the caffeine wear off.

4. Do a quick midday workout

During my lunch break, I walk a couple of days per week as well which is great to boost my energy for the afternoon. If you work at an office type job especially, you may feel pretty tired from sitting around. Getting up and doing a bit of exercise will help give you a boost of energy to help get you through the rest of your day. Do some jumping jacks, squats, planks, pushups, etc. Just 5 minutes will get your heart rate up and increase your energy.

5. Hyland's Good Morning

Hyland’s Good Morning is a caffeine-free alertness aid that helps your energy through the day after you have a sleepless night. It is homeopathic medication that is natural. It helps with the mental and emotional aftermath of a night that you did not get much sleep. It helps with drowsiness and fatigue without the caffeine. It can also help with irritability and mental lethargy. I know that when I do not sleep, I am an ugly person to be around because I am so irritable. Sleep is so important!
