5 Tips for Oral Health

Oral health is so important in the prevention of cavities and other dental issues. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are threats to oral health through your lifespan. Nearly 1/3 of adults in the US have untreated tooth decay. One in seven adults aged 35-44 have gum disease. Therefore, good oral hygiene is very important in the prevention of different oral health issues.

Here are some tips for good oral health that can help keep your pearly whites healthy:

1. Brush twice a day
You should be brushing your teeth at least twice per day and for at least two minutes at a time.

2. Floss daily
This is one that can be easy to forget but it is super important to remember. It is amazing how if you do not floss for awhile, there is a lot of buildup between your teeth- yuck! Floss everyday!

3. Visit a dentist twice a year
You should be getting your teeth cleaned twice per year. My sister is a dental assistant and makes sure that I get my cleanings regularly! You may get x-rays, they can see if you have any cavities, give fluoride treatments and of course, clean your teeth.

4. Limit sugar
Sugar is terrible on your teeth and can increase your risk of cavities. A huge culprit that many people do not realize is drinking beverages that contain sugar (or acid). When you sip on a huge pop all day long, you are constantly exposing your poor teeth to sugar. Sip mostly water or unsweetened beverages such as tea.

5. Chew sugar-free gum
Chewing sugar-free gum such as Trident for 20 minutes after eating and drinking helps to clean and protect your teeth. Four out of five dentists would recommend Trident gum to their patients.

I love Trident gum and have been chewing it since I was little. I remember my grandma always having Trident to give to us kids. I like the peppermint and spearmint flavors the best.

Trident has supported Oral Health America's non-profit program Smiles Across America for the past 11 years and have donated more than $2.5 million! This money has helped more than two million children get preventative dental care. During the week of September 20th, every pack of Trident that is purchased will provide a $0.05 donation to Smiles Across America, up to $250,000. Void in AL, MA and SC.
