How I'm Staying Fit in the First Trimester

During the first trimester, it can be easier to lay on the couch and sleep instead of exercise but I learned early in my first pregnancy that the way to feel my best is to exercise daily. It can certainly be hard to get motivated, especially when you feel exhausted and sick. During and after exercise, I felt better every single time compared to when I didn't exercise. It actually helps me feel a lot more energized!

While my workouts are not too crazy, I do enjoy doing them. My daily goal is to meet 12,000 steps on my FitBit. How I achieve this is going on a walk first thing in the morning when I wakeup with my dog Jaxen. We usually walk about two miles. A few times a week, I will walk during my lunch break at work. Other days, I run errands on my lunch and get some steps in that way.

Right after work is usually when I get super tired. This is the hardest time of the day for me to want to do anything. This is tough because this is when I pickup my daughter and obviously, she is very active and loves to play. Usually, I do sit down for awhile because I am trying not to push myself too hard. In the evening, we may go on a little family walk with Adalyn in the stroller or walk to our church where she runs around and walks on her own.

Some days, I do not meet my 12,000 step goal but some days, I get a few thousand steps more than that. It just depends! At times, I run a bit- about 1/2 mile or so but am not usually in the mood to do so. I aim to lift weights and do some abdominal exercises twice a week but usually make it once a week.

I am not running marathons or doing Crossfit but am doing what feels good to me and is helping me feel my best during this pregnancy. I hope to keep this up through my whole pregnancy as I did with Adalyn. Fitness for me has nothing to do with weight loss or anything but feeling my best.

A couple other things that I am doing to feel good in the first trimester is drinking plenty of water. I notice that when I feel dehydrated, I feel sick so I make sure to drink a lot of water through the day. I also eat as many nutrient rich foods that I can, even though at times they sounded yucky.

An important part of pregnancy health to me is taking my daily vitamins to ensure that my nutrient needs are being met so that I can grow a healthy and strong baby.

I also take a probiotic for gut health. I've been liking Florastor® Daily Probiotics. It helps to restore your natural flora in your gut, strengthens digestive balance and supports a healthy immune system. I love talking about probiotics because I feel like a lot of people still do not know what they are and how they can help you.

It is resistant to antibiotics and can be taken by the whole family ages 2 months and up. Gut health is so important and taking a probiotic can be very beneficial.

  1. Probiotics have really helped me so I'm always on the lookout on trying new ones. It helps me to switch off to different kinds and these look great.
