What foods to pack for a day out with kids including lots of fruit, veggies, beef tender bites, cheese, nutritious bars and more for better-for-you snacking ideas!

It is sweet summer time and Troy who is a teacher is off work for the summer and the kids are home! Since I work from home, my schedule is flexible and we are spending all summer doing all of the fun things (oh, and having a baby!). Almost every single day, we are out at the zoo, a park, the pool, a splash pad, an outdoor concert and more. Life is so much fun right now! We always, always pack a ton of food everywhere we go and today, I want to share some of my tips for food to pack for a day out with kids including our favorite meat snacks from Lorissa's Kitchen. Lorissa's Kitchen is more of a tender bite and more kid friendly as it is already in bite size pieces.

There are a few reasons why we always pack food when we leave the house. First of all, my kids and I love to snack often and they are constantly saying how they are starving and need food ASAP even after we just ate. It saves so many meltdowns just having nutritious snacks on hand. It also saves money by not having to buy food out. Finally, we pack our own food because it is usually better for you than buying food out and about.

When we leave for a day out of the house, I consider how long we will be gone when deciding what food to bring. If we need a meal, that will include different foods than if we are just going to be gone just 3 hours in the morning and will be home for lunch. I consider if we want to (or will be allowed to) bring a cooler to keep food cold.

Food to Pack for a Day Out with Kids

1. Protein

Protein rich foods and snacks help to keep us full longer than foods that don't have protein. They also help make a heartier snack or part of a meal. Some favorites include sliced cheese, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on whole-grain bread and Lorissa's Kitchen® meat. My husband and kids are super obsessed with meat snacks and love Lorissa's Kitchen! It has no preservatives, no added MSG, no added nitrates, is gluten free and makes a good source of protein snack on-the-go.

The Korean barbecue and original flavors are awesome! I actually packed some in my husband's hospital bag for when we had the baby for nutritious snacks. Last summer, we had Lorissa's Kitchen products on hand all summer long and took it everywhere we went including road trips and day trips. It is super tasty and my entire family loves it. They come in lots of different flavors and made with turkey, beef and chicken. They are all awesome!

2. Fruit

We pretty much always bring fruit for a day out because the kids and I love it, it is easy to pack and is hydrating. Even Troy has become a better fruit eater at the urging of my 4 year old that Daddy must eat fruit! Things that pack well for a day out are apples, bananas, grapes, blueberries, cherries, peaches and more. I often cut apples into slices for a day out because they are easier to eat when in slices and we can all grab a couple to snack on while being out on a summer adventure.

3. Bars

My kids love bars and they are one of the easiest snacks to pack for a day out and to eat on the go. I like snacking on bars at the zoo while I'm pushing the stroller. Word to the wise: don't bring bars that have a chocolate coating on a hot day because they will melt everywhere and make a huge mess. Oliver is famous for being covered in chocolate coating when out and about!

4. Vegetables

My favorite vegetable to bring on a day trip out is carrots. I buy a 3 or 5 pound bag of carrots and cut them into slices for easy travel. We also love celery, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and radishes. We don't typically have dip with them but if we have a cooler and will be sitting down to eat, we may bring little cups of ranch dressing to dip the vegetables in. To pair with the veggies, the Lorissa's Kitchen meat snacks is always a favorite and gets eaten right away.

5. Whole-grains

We always choose whole-grains over refined ones when possible and love packing foods like whole-grain crackers, popcorn or even a container of pasta salad made with whole-grain noodles.

6. Low-sugar drinks

Our main drink to pack for a day out is water, water, water! Each of us pack our own large refillable water bottle and especially during the summer, it is so important to stay hydrated. We like throwing some ice cubes into our water bottles to keep them cool for awhile. If we go anywhere in the morning, Troy and I also bring coffee in a travel mug. We don't really do a lot of juice for the kids unless it is for a treat.

These are most of the foods that we pack for a day out with the kids. It doesn't have to be hard or take more than 5 minutes to pack a bunch of snacks or a lunch to enjoy on-the-go. Stocking up on Lorissa's Kitchen
meat snacks, fruits, veggies and easy snacks makes us all happy. I hope that this post help inspire you to pack your own food to help save money, be a little bit more nutritious than something like fast food and so that you always have food on hand for hungry kiddos!

  1. I've tried Lorissa's Kitchen jerky before and it's delicious! I really like how tender it is and easy to chew. Yes, definitely avoid bars that are coated in chocolate. We learned that the hard way on a 10 hour drive to visit my in-laws!
