Everything You Need to Know About Handwashing + Giveaway

Everything you need to know about handwashing including tips, why handwashing is important and what Americans find important about handwashing.

This has been the worst sick season we have been through! My kids have been sick 8-9 times each with stomach bugs and different colds and I have been sick 4-5 times. We're sick of being sick! I recently learned some super helpful handwashing statistics that I wanted to share to help you stay healthy.

As a mom of 3 kids, ages 8, 5, 3, I can tell you that my kids touch everything. Just the other day, I saw my 3 year old have her mouth on a handrail at a basketball game with hundreds of people! I'm constantly telling my younger ones "please get off the ground, there are so many germs there."- I am definitely not a germaphobe mom but with all of this sickness, I cannot take it anymore. I did a bunch of research on handwashing and want to share what I learned and you better believe that I went through these handwashing do's and don'ts with my kids.

Tips For Handwashing

  • Wash your hands every time you use the bathroom, before cooking, after being around someone who is sick, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
  • You should wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you need help keeping track of time, you can hum the "happy birthday" song twice.
  • If you cannot wash your hands at the time, you can use hand sanitizer. Look for one with at least 60% alcohol. This is super helpful during outings when you can't always find a sink to wash your hands.

Handwashing Statistics

-According to the Healthy Handwashing Survey™ from Bradley Corporation, 93% of adults believe handwashing is essential to maintaining their overall health.

-Americans especially turn to handwashing to stay healthy before a trip (we have a trip coming up and I told my kids to wash their hands extra and to avoid visibly sick people!), for special occasions and while traveling.

-75% of adults wash their hands on a stop at a road trip, 69% at an airport and 63% wash their hands when a special occasion is coming up. Let's up these numbers people!

-70% of people feel safer and healthier after washing their hands.

-65% of Americans have a negative impression when they see someone not wash their hands after using the restroom.

Bradley Corp. surveys over 1,000 people annually to learn about their handwashing habits, concerns about flu and other sicknesses and their use of public restrooms.

  2. Yes, wash your hands, but while we're all here: keep fingernails trimmed and clean...
