Hot Chocolate Bombs

Hot Chocolate Bombs are super easy to make- dark chocolate balls filled with hot cocoa mix and marshmallows! Pour into a hot cup of milk for rich and creamy hot chocolate.

Hot Cocoa Bombs

When the hot chocolate bombs trend came out, I didn't think much of it at first. Then, I was at a party recently and saw how when you pour hot milk onto the cocoa bomb, the hot cocoa bomb opened up. I thought, this was awesome! It would make the best holiday gift so I decided to make them myself. They are so much fun and really easy to make!

Hot Cocoa Bomb Hot Chocolate

What is a hot chocolate bomb?

If you don't know what a hot chocolate bomb is, it is a large ball of chocolate that is filled with homemade hot cocoa and marshmallows. When you pour very hot milk onto the cocoa ball, it melts and opens up to release the cocoa and marshmallows for a super fun and indulgent cup of hot cocoa.

Of course, my kids love these hot cocoa bombs. You can make them in so many different flavors. You can make them using dark chocolate or milk chocolate if you prefer. You can make them regular hot cocoa flavor or add fun flavors like caramel, peanut butter, raspberry, white chocolate or mint. You can top them with crushed peppermint or sprinkles. Make a variety of flavors for fun!

I was going to see if I could borrow the silicone molds for making the hot chocolate bombs from someone I know and then realized a 2 pack is literally $4 on Amazon so I recommend picking these up for an inexpensive project. At first, I tried to make them in a firmer silicone mold and it didn't work at all. The chocolate broke into little pieces. This one worked fantastic.

2-Ingredient Hot Cocoa Mix

It is crazy easy to make your own hot chocolate mix with only two ingredients: powdered sugar and cocoa powder. You can certainly buy the hot chocolate mix already made to save a couple minutes or if that's what you have on hand. I like knowing that it only has 2 ingredients in it.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs

First, mix together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar for your hot cocoa mix. Use a high quality cocoa powder for most delicious results. Take Ghiradelli Melting Wafers (I like dark chocolate) and melt them in a bowl. About a minute and a half worked well. Do not overheat so it is boiling. Use a Taylor thermometer (the BEST digital thermometers out there!) to make sure the temperature doesn't get above 120 degrees F for the best results.

Melted chocolate for cocoa bombs

Use the melted chocolate to pour into your round silicone chocolate molds using a tablespoon and making sure the chocolate is all around the mold. Save any remaining chocolate. Let cool until chocolate is firm- only takes a few minutes. Remove the half circles from the molds carefully. Add 1-2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows to half of the molds.

If chocolate is no longer melted, heat it up until just melted. Lightly dip the empty chocolate ball halves into the melted chocolate and place on the half  that is full of cocoa mix. Do this step carefully so they don't break and so they aren't messy.

Let chocolate cool to dry and then top with drizzled chocolate or whatever else you like. Don't worry if the seams are showing. I like them not being sealed too firmly because they open up nicer this way when your hot milk is poured on it. To make hot chocolate, place a bomb in a mug and top with 1 1/2 cups of very hot milk. Mix and enjoy!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a mixing bowl or mason jar, mix together the cocoa powder and powdered sugar and set aside for later.
  2. In a microwave safe bowl, add the chocolate and heat in 30 second increments in the microwave until just melted. Take the temperature with a Taylor thermometer to make sure the temperature is not over 120 degrees F- it should be lightly warm but not hot or bubbling. Stir the chocolate to make sure it is all melted.
  3. Coat the silicone chocolate molds with chocolate using a tablespoon and making sure the chocolate is all around the mold. Save any remaining chocolate.
  4. Let chocolate cool- it only takes a few minutes. You can put it in the fridge to make it go faster. Remove the half circles from the molds carefully. Add 1-2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix and mini marshmallows to half of the molds.
  5. If the leftover chocolate is no longer melted, heat it up until just melted. Lightly dip the empty chocolate ball halves into the melted chocolate and place on the half  that is full of cocoa mix.
  6. Let chocolate cool to dry and then top with drizzled chocolate or whatever else you like.
  7. To make hot chocolate, place a bomb in a mug and top with 1 1/2 cups of very hot milk. Slowly pour the milk right onto the cocoa bomb. Mix and enjoy!
**Store these chocolate bombs in the fridge in a covered container.

Tip: it is okay if the seam is showing a little bit on your cocoa bomb- it helps the cocoa bomb open nicely when milk is poured on it!

Enjoy!
