I wanted to share a great smoothie recipe with you that I drank when I was pregnant with Oliver. It is loaded with nutrients that are great for anyone, but especially pregnant women. As a dietitian and mom, I wanted to make sure that I was getting enough nutrients for baby to get them off to the right start.

This smoothie is loaded with lots of healthy foods and would be great for breakfast or a snack anytime of day. I included frozen berries, bananas, peanut butter, chia seeds, yogurt and milk all for different reasons that help benefit baby and mom.

Ingredients in Pregnancy Superfood Smoothie

Chia seeds

You know I had to go there! I am a huge fan of chia seeds, which are rich in fiber, omega-3 and protein. Omega-3 is super important for baby's brain and eye development.

Greek yogurt

Greek yogurt is rich in protein and calcium, which helps to keep you full and is important for cell growth. It is important that baby gets enough calcium, because your body will take calcium from mom's stores and give it to baby. Calcium is important for strong bones.

Bananas

Bananas are an awesome source of potassium and provide quick energy. They are great to eat before or after exercising and are light on the stomach when you may be experiencing nausea.

Milk

To get everything blending, milk is a great liquid to use as it is rich in protein, vitamin D and calcium. One cup of milk provides about 30 percent of your daily calcium needs, which is 1000 milligrams.

Berries

Berries are rich in fiber, especially raspberries. Pregnant women often suffer from constipation and fiber is a great way to help resolve that. Berries are also rich in antioxidants, which we all need.

Peanut butter

Peanut butter is a great source of healthy fat, which is essential for baby's brain development and keeping you full for longer.

I also recommend for moms-to-be to take a prenatal with omega-3 fatty acids along with a nutritious diet to ensure that they are getting the nutrients that they need to stay healthy and help support your babies growth and development. When I was pregnant and trying to conceive the first time, I took Nature Made® Prenatal Multi + DHA (200 mg) 150 count softgels from Sam's Club. The best part about it is that you just have to take 1 pill instead of several and you get your multivitamin and omega-3 all in one.

You can buy these at Sam's Club and you get a 5 month supply for about $20. This is a great deal and I love the big pack so you don't have to keep remembering to buy more each month. You can also pickup all of the ingredients for this smoothie at Sam's Club too. Nature Made® Prenatal Vitamins are clinically proven to absorb folic acid and iron, which are both essential nutrients for mom and baby. The recommendation is to take a prenatal vitamin 6 months before trying to get pregnant. This prenatal has essential vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium, iodine, vitamin B12 and vitamin D3.† They provide 200 mg DHA, which may help support fetal brain and eye development.† It also contains folic acid, which is an important vitamin for proper development of the baby's nervous system.† It can also help reduce a woman's risk of having a child with a neural tube defect.
