5 Nutrition Tips for Healthy Skin

5 Nutrition Tips for Healthy Skin including staying hydrated, taking collagen supplements and what foods to eat.

Since our skin is the body's largest organ, it is so important to keep it healthy! I want to share my best nutrition tips for healthy skin. When our skin is hydrated and getting plenty of nutrients, it will look its best too. Focusing on an overall healthy diet that is good for us: whole-grains, lots of fruits and veggies, lean protein, etc., is what is best for our skin as well.

1. Stay hydrated

When your skin is dehydrated, it can look dull. Drink lots of water through the day. I would recommend drinking at least 8 cups of water per day though I definitely drink more. Tea, smoothies,  and soup count towards your water consumption as well so feel free to drink those too. To encourage you to drink more water, I suggest taking a water bottle with you wherever you go to make staying hydrated easy.

2. Take collagen supplements

I've gotten really into collagen the last few years and learned that it can be beneficial for your skin. Collagen is a component of your skin that plays a role in strengthening skin and elasticity. As you age, you may notice that your skin is dry which is because your body is producing less collagen. I definitely suffer from dry skin so I like taking collagen. Taking supplements that contain collagen can help reduce wrinkles and dryness in your skin.

3. Choose antioxidant-rich foods

Antioxidants can help your skin look its best! Focus on foods like berries, spinach, yellow and orange produce like carrots, oranges and bell peppers. Look for foods rich in vitamins A, C and E. Most fruits and veggies contain vitamins A and C so eating a diet rich in produce is your best bet.

4. Eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids

Research suggests possibly that eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, chia seeds, flax seeds or taking fish oil supplements can help promote younger looking skin. It helps with overall skin health and can help skin to look moisturized. Omega-3 also help to reduce inflammation which can cause redness and acne on your skin.

5. Limit sugar and refined carbohydrates

Foods rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, rice and crackers can contribute to skin aging. Aim for whole-wheat versions of these products. Limit food high in sugar like candy, cookies, baked goods and more. Fruit can be rich in antioxidants and taste sweet so choose those most of the time instead.
