5 Winter Health and Fitness Goals

With the start of the New Year, health and fitness are on my mind. I love thinking of my goals ahead of time and focusing on them as the start of the New Year hits. Many of my goals are a continuation of what I have already been doing and some of them are newer goals to help me stay healthy or get healthier.

5 Winter Health and Fitness Goals

1. Limit caffeine to 1 cup per day

I got into a bad habit (for me) this fall where I was insanely busy with work for 2 months straight and in order to power through my day, I was having 2 huge mugs of coffee a day. While this is not way too much caffeine, it didn't feel good in my body and left my stomach feeling awful after the second cup. Also, I noticed a terrible crash late afternoon that I didn't have when I just drank my 1 cup. I will be sticking to 1 cup as much as possible.

2. Run through the winter

To me, this is by far the hardest goal because in Michigan, our winters are FREEZING. I just ran this morning and it was about 20 degrees out, I had on gloves, hat, 3 layers of shirts and running leggings and I was still cold at times. I run with my dad twice a week and this time is very important to me so I want to be able to continue to do it all winter long. I made sure to stock up on the right gear so I don't freeze to death. My dad got me a balaclava to wear over my face during really cold days which has been coming in handy on windy and cold days.

3. Focus on oral health

I am so embarrassed to say that this year, I found out that I had 5 cavities!!! How awful!! I couldn't believe it as I take good care of my teeth and don't drink sugary beverages or anything. Getting them filled was a huge pain and I had residual pain for 40 days after where I was taking frequent pain medications just to not have a throbbing mouth. I will do anything that I can to avoid this happening again.

I brush my teeth 2-3 times a day, make sure to floss daily (this is easy to forget for me for some reason) and take a probiotic that focuses on oral health. I have been loving ProBiora Health™ ProBiora Plus probiotic mints. They help restore the good bacteria in your mouth. It can help promote healthy gums, fresher breath and whiter teeth.

Being overall healthy includes having a healthy mouth. The same bad bacteria in your mouth is the same kind as in the arterial plaque in heart disease. Oral care issues have been linked to heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Even if you take care of your mouth, cavities and swollen/bleeding gums can be common due to the bad bacteria in your mouth.

It is super easy to take ProBiora Plus. It has millions of good bacteria leading to a better balance in the mouth that drives out the bacteria that causes gum disease, tooth decay and less-than-fresh breath. They use a blend of probiotics called ProBiora3®.

I have been taking these for a month and love them! I am a big fan of probiotics anyways and learning about the oral health benefits makes me like them even more!

There are no known interactions between ProBiora Plus and medications. In fact, it is wise to use ProBiora Plus during and after a course of antibiotics, which can disrupt the bacterial balance in the mouth. As with use for any medication, it is suggested that you check with your Doctor/Dentist or Pharmacist for more information.

4. Lift weights twice a week

I think that this will forever be on my "goals" list because I am terrible about doing it. I do not know why but for years, I have struggled with regularly lifting weights. It is so irritating because I feel great when I do it and quickly notice an increase in strength. The reason that weight lifting is so important to me is because of all of the health benefits but also because my kids are getting bigger and I still want to be able to carry them around when they need me to. This is my personal goal and motivation to stay strong!! Now if I can just get myself to do it twice a week, every week!

Build Your Own Yogurt Bowl Bar has tons of toppings for yogurt including fruit, honey, nuts, seeds, cereal, granola and more for a fun breakfast that the whole family will love and that is great for entertaining! www.nutritionistreviews.com

5. Regularly eat foods rich in omega-3

I love learning more and more about the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids (heart health especially) and my kids know all about why they're important. We are not good about eating fish in my family so we have to focus on getting our omega-3 fatty acids in different ways. One major way is chia seeds. Every yogurt that my kids or I eat, we sprinkle a bunch of chia seeds in there for a boost of fiber, protein and omega-3. A couple of other sources of omega-3 are ground flax seeds and walnuts. I also take an omega-3 supplement to ensure that I am meeting my needs.

Those are my 5 health and fitness goals that I am working on right now! What are some of your goals for the New Year?

  1. I love running in winter in Chicago - the right gear (and unseasonably warm) temps help! I also feel the same way about weights. I have a trainer once a week so I actually life but I like the 7 minute workout (J&J) for body weight workouts. I find those more "do-able."
